Starbucks Coffeehouse Press Release
Starbucks
Tampa, FL
While yellow stucco walls are the signature feature of the new Starbucks in Tampa, FL., it's what's just beneath the material that makes the project so interesting. The entire building was constructed using structural insulated panels from Structall Building Systems Inc., Oldsmar, FL.
According to Simon Domb, an architectural designer for Structall, the structural insulated panel system concept has been used in residential construction for years. It is only now beginning to be used commercially.
"What makes it unique is that the building was totally pre-cut — it's being put together like a model airplane,' Domb told the Sarasota (FL) Herald Tribune at the time of the building's construction.
The panels used for the project's construction were 6"-wide poly-styrene-filled units with 26-gauge steel skins. They carry and R-value of 24. While stucco was applied over the panels used for the walls, a standing seam roof system was installed over the panels used for the roof.
The building erector was Innovative Construction of Leesburg, FL. Nationwide Contractors Inc., Tampa, was the general contractor. The building was completed in January 2002.
